This model features programmable volumetric dosing and an adjustable pre-infusion. It also comes with a steam wand and commercial-grade group head.
1. Breville Bambino Plus
The Bambino Plus, despite its cute name, is an actual machine. It is packed with features that make it a good option for those looking to upgrade from the standard Breville espresso machines or wants an alternative that is more automated than a manual.
It uses a PID controller that does the temperature and pressure control, so it's ready for brewing when you press the button. It also has a technology called Thermo Jet that allows it to warm up in just 3 seconds, so you can get your espresso faster than most other home espresso machines (which take 10 to 30 minutes to warm up).
The machine was created with simplicity in mind. There is only one button to manage everything. You can select a single shot or a double shot, and determine the brewing time which is something you can't do with other espresso machines at this price point. The polished stainless steel finish gives it a luxurious appearance, and its small size makes it perfect for those who have small space for countertops or a small kitchen.
The Bambino Plus comes with everything you require to get started brewing. This includes a steel 54mm tamper, as well as a dose trimming tool. It's the only machine in this class that can do this, and it shows that Breville is dedicated to making their products as secure as is possible. It also comes with built-in reminders for descaling and cleaning to ensure it runs smoothly.
The Bambino Plus may be the most basic espresso machine for those who are new to espresso. It's user-friendly, has a fast heat-up time and does a great job of automatically blending milk for you. However, its price tag may put it beyond the reach of some people.
2. De'Longhi Stilosa
The De'Longhi Stilosa manual espresso machine is an excellent, budget-friendly choice that's perfect for both beginners and coffee enthusiasts. It's simple to use, looks great on the counter, and can make fantastic cappuccinos, great espresso and lattes. However, it does have a few drawbacks that should be taken into consideration.
In our metrics for brewing The Stilosa scored below average to average for its quality of brewing and its control. This was due to the small filter baskets, and the lack of a temperature control. Both of these aspects restrict your ability to adjust the extraction. We liked that this machine heats up quickly and that the spout is able to be adjusted to a suitable height.
The unit also has a convenient water reservoir that can hold up to 34 ounces. It also has an inbuilt indicator for the level to let you know when to refill. It's also movable, which is helpful in the event that you want to clean the tank or if there's no sink nearby. Another new feature on this model is a removable drip tray that lets you hold taller cups under the spout.
Stilosa was also a disappointment when it came to our steaming metrics. This was due to its limited control of the temperature of the steam and the lack of pre-infusion features. Both of these are features that are common in machines that cost more. Despite its shortcomings, we appreciated that it is easy to maintain and comes with a one-year warranty. The De'Longhi Stilosa is a great addition to your home coffee bar. It's easier to use than other models we've tested and will save money on cafe drinks.
3. Breville Barista Express Impress
The Breville Barista Express Impress (that's quite a mouthful, don't you think?) is a machine specifically designed for those who are interested in learning about espresso. This single boiler, pump-driven machine aims to make it simple for anyone to make a decent shot of espresso without sacrificing flavor or brewing consistency.
Its easy-to-use controls make it easy to alter the settings for the grinder, tamper, and brew groups. You can choose between single and double shots, as well as your preferred temperature. The built-in thermocoil heater ensures that your espresso is ready to go within 30 seconds. This is much faster than the typical wait of 30 minutes single boiler machines need to be at temperature.
Another feature that is important is the "impressive" dosing and tamping mechanism that works with the tamper to adjust the proper amount of ground coffee per shot. The system utilizes an integrated sensor to gauge the depth of the basket and adjusts the amount of ground coffee that is dispensed. And if you're feeling less certain about the ability to control the size of the grind, water temperature, and dosing, the machine offers several presets that can help.
The Barista Express Impress includes the infamous single-hole steam wand that can create some pretty impressive Latte art, too. This is the same wand that you'll find in Breville’s high-end Barista Express machines, and it's great.
I'm not a huge fan of coffee shortcuts, fully-automatic machines, or even pods. But the Impress does exactly what it says without becoming intimidating or taking the fun out of making an espresso. I'm pleased to give it a thumbs-up for this!

This machine comes with a pressure gauge on the head of the group. It's a nice feature, as it lets you monitor the pressure of your extraction live. You can adjust the OPV to fine-tune the extraction, giving you a level of customization that's typically reserved for more expensive machines.
Other notable features of the Diletta include its easy-to-clean accessible water tank on the side and its energy saving mode, which can be set in 10-minute increments up to two hours.
